This past year the FDA, AMA, New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Dermatology concluded there was no evidence to support that sunscreens protect against Melanoma skin cancer.

Common Beliefs about Sunscreen Create False Sense of Security

Sunscreens containing SPF do not block the full UVA/UVB/UVC spectrum. Regardless of their “protection factor,” damaging ultraviolet rays can still penetrate the skin and cause cellular damage contributing to skin wrinkling and skin cancer.

Current SPF products and science do nothing to prevent free radicals at the cellular level nor do they have any function in protecting or building the immune system. Therefore, you are not receiving protection against the sun’s harmful rays.

Current Sunscreens Pose a Number of Health Problems

Because chemical sunscreens start to decompose in the presence of UV rays and lose effectiveness, they must be applied continuously, but they still leave skin vulnerable to damage. Studies at all levels have proven chemical sunscreens penetrate the skin, get into the bloodstream and are harmful to the body. The breakdown of chemical sunscreens forms additional harmful chemicals. Non-chemical sunscreens are not stable, are reactive and contribute to the formation of free radicals.

What is a Free Radical?

noun. An atom or group of atoms that has at least one unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive.

In animal tissues, free radicals can damage cells and are believed to accelerate the progression of cancer. They can be produced by natural biological processes or introduced from the outside (such as tobacco, smoke, toxins or pollutants) and can damage cells, proteins and DNA by altering their chemical structure.

Free radicals generate wild chain reactions and impair skin cells through a process called oxidation, comparable to rusting. The cells are punctured then torn apart, resulting in skin wrinkling and eventually skin cancer.

The May 2004 International Journal of Dermatology reports, “Free radicals are involved with all steps of carcinogenesis [of the skin]. These findings provide a promising rationale for the development of powerful new antioxidant strategies in the prevention and therapy of skin care.”

A news report on NPR this morning reminded us that tomorrow is World Diabetes Day. International health organizations have seen dramatic increases in diabetes in places where it was previously unknown as Western dietary routines are exported around the globe. Diabetes is considered the number one preventable epidemic by World Health experts.
With a diabetes related amputation taking place at a rate of 1 every 30 seconds, the ten years of developing and testing Immune Perféct will hopefully soon start to reverse the numbers of amputations.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on 14 November. The date was chosen as it is the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922. Many people with oily foreheads have told us the same thing- using Immune Perféct causes their skin to be less oily. It was the first thing our advertising guy noticed when he started using it.

Because I’d had such success with the Frownies Facial Pads, I decided to try their new products, Immune Perfect and Immune Shield. You cannot get these products on amazon.com but you can order them through frownies.com. Again, I was skeptical because I have oily skin that is very prone to breakouts, and I have always been VERY picky about the products I used on my skin. Immune Perfect is wonderful! I was a bit surprised when I first tried it because the texture is a cross between a cream and a gel, but my skin hasn’t looked more radiant or felt softer in years! I get compliments all of the time about how good my skin looks - PLUS I’m less oily throughout the day and have virtually no breakouts anymore. I think it’s a good thing that the texture of the cream is thinner though because it spreads easily and I get more for my money.

If you have oily skin, especially an oily forehead, Immune Peféct may be the perfect answer for you.

Diabetes isn’t an easy disease to live with. Ask someone who has had to have a limb amputated due to complications stemming from diabetic neuropathy (loss of feeling or burning pain from diabetic induced nerve damage). Diabetes is one of the leading cause factors for amputations.

Due to increasing obesity in developed countries, the incidence of diabetes is also increasing. Currently, it’s estimated one in every 15 people in the world has diabetes with over 15.7 million in the United States.

Proper foot care is one of the most important regimes for diabetics. High blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels and nerves in your body leading to loss of feeling in extremities. Once the skin is broken, from improper nail care, dry skin, improper shoe fit, it can develop into ulcers, which are serious deep sores that can become infected and lead to hospitalization and amputation.
These are tips for good foot health care for diabetics:

Prevention

Your health care provider should perform a complete foot exam at least annually - more often if you have foot problems.
Remember to take off your socks and shoes while you wait for your physical examination.
Call or see your health care provider if you have cuts or breaks in the skin, or have an ingrown nail. Also, tell your health care provider if your foot changes color, shape, or just feels different (for example, becomes less sensitive or hurts).
If you have corns or calluses, your health care provider can trim them for you. Your health care provider can also trim your toenails if you cannot do so safely.
Because people with diabetes are more prone to foot problems, a foot care specialist may be on your health care team.

How can I avoid problems with my feet?

Keep your blood sugar level as close to normal as possible. Also, follow your doctor’s advice on diet, exercise and medicine. Here are some other ways to protect your feet:
Wash your feet every day with lukewarm (not hot) water and mild soap.
Dry your feet well, especially between the toes. Use a soft towel and pat gently; don’t rub.
Keep the skin of your feet smooth by applying Immune Perféct Cream to the foot and ankle. If the skin is cracked, talk to your doctor about how to treat it.
Check your feet every day. You may need a mirror to look at the bottoms of your feet. Call your doctor at the very first sign of redness, swelling, pain that doesn’t go away, or numbness or tingling in any part of your foot.
Don’t treat calluses, corns or bunions without talking to your doctor first.
Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. It might help to soak your toenails in warm water to soften them before you cut them.

Margaret Kroesen Inventor of Frownies
Frownies were created in 1889 after discovered that her daughter Alice, a concert pianist, had developed unsightly wrinkles and frown lines. With a desire to maintain her youthful beauty and stage presence, Mrs. Kroesen created Wrinkle Eradicators (as they were first called) by employing the basic principle of fitness to the muscles of the face. At the time, there was no thought of producing them for anyone else but herself and her daughter. But Alice, after using her mother’s amazing invention, was a living testimony, and it became clear that women and men everywhere could benefit from these Wrinkle Eradicators.

Several years later, Mrs. Kroesen’s husband’s death made it necessary for her to enter the business world; she joined B & P Company (Beauty and Personality) as Managing Director. At the time, B & P specialized in barber supplies such as straight razors, razor straps and pomades. With the advent of the safety razor, sales lagged and profits dwindled, making the bankers who owned the company happy to accept Mrs. Kroesen’s offer to buy them out.

As owner, she gradually dropped the barber supplies, and offered only her Wrinkle Eradicators and skin treatments. A few small ads were placed to help get the word out about her amazing invention, and these soon paid off in increased sales. During World War II a luxury tax was placed on cosmetic products forcing Mrs. Kroesen to drop all lines except the facial pads.

Every month makeup artist Perc Westmore (founder of The House of Westmore) sent a box of mail from women and men requesting help in eliminating wrinkle and frown lines. Westmore was instrumental in promoting Frowines to the entertainment industry and those influenced by it. Mrs. Kroesen and her granddaughter Margaret personally answered the hundreds of letters they received from all over the world.

The November 15, 1937 issue of LIFE Magazine highlighted Frownies being used by Hollywood actresses in the article “Young Starlets Learn to Act at Fox Drama School.” The following, an excerpt:

“Miss [Dixie] Dunbar, a Twentieth Century-Fox featured player, was recently sent back to Miss [Florence] Enright’s school to get rid of a frown. The picture shows Miss Dunbar with a frown; in the centre, the anti-frowner [Frownie]…is applied to the forehead; at right, she talks without frowning.”

Alice Laumer, Mrs. Kroesen’s daughter, joined the business to help with the growing sales. After Alice’s death, Mrs. Kroesen remained at the helm of the company until her own passing in 1962.

Continuing the Legacy
Following her mother and grandmother in business, Margaret Wright (named after her grandmother) redesigned and updated the packaging for Frownies, never altering the formula which had proven so effective.

Frownies remained, at the time, a relatively well-kept beauty secret between Broadway and Hollywood stars and makeup artists. Olivia de Havilland ordered Frownies, and had them sent to her at hotels all over the world. Gloria Swanson wore them in Sunset Boulevard, one of the greatest movies about Hollywood ever made. And the infamous Kennedy women wrote letters to B & P Company ordering Frownies.

Now, more than a century since they were created, Mrs. Wright still oversees the operations of the company, but her daughter-in-law, Kathy Wright, is now taking her turn as the fourth generation woman helping preserve the faces of women and men everywhere.
